Last week the government announced that Massachusetts received more than half a million dollars – $ 633,000 – for the fight against obesity. Given the size of the problem, this amount may seem minuscule. Is not it ironic that we need money for people to eat less? Anywhere else people need money for food, whereas here we need money to teach people to eat better.
Here’s the problem: we do not eat properly. We know it’s easier and cheaper to buy junk food than to buy fresh ingredients and prepare a healthy meal. But it need not be so.
The amount that the state received will be used mostly to inform people about how to eat more healthily. For example, did you know that from November the networks of restaurants with branches in Massachusetts would show the customer the calorie content of meals they sell? The main objective of this requirement is to facilitate the customer to choose foods with fewer calories. Similar measures were implemented in New York City and other parts the country. This site has been shown that when the client knows the calorie content of dishes, it tends to choose foods with fewer calories. That is, people who know how many calories are in their meals tend to eat more healthily. While the restaurants are changing their recipes to prepare the same dishes, but with fewer calories.
What else can the government do to reduce what experts call the “epidemic” of obesity in this country? The government can do much. The above example is just one of many examples that could be cited here.
However, personal responsibility is crucial in the fight against obesity. So I ask: what do you think people can do at home, at work, in schools and communities to end this epidemic?
Far beyond the budgets of government or the view of public health professionals, we all can and must do something to solve the problem of obesity.
