Osteopathy is a system of therapy usually associated with manipulation of the spine and joints. The majority of people seek osteopathic treatment for the relief of back and neck pain. Sometimes one consultation is all that is required, but often a course of treatment over four to six sessions is recommended.
Today osteopathy has been generally accepted as an adjunct or alternative to conventional medical practices. Osteopaths take a full medical history of their patients and use X-rays and other medical technology to diagnose illness.
Osteopathy is based on the theory that the body has the inherent capacity to overcome most curable diseases. To do this, the body must have normal body mechanics, good environmental conditions and sound nutrition. Manipulation is used to correct faulty structural relationships.
An osteopathic treatment will most often involve both massage and manipulation of the joints, tendons and muscles. The manipulation is used to realign joints in order to unlock them and release tension. Osteopathy believes that a range of disorders can be cured or alleviated by such manipulation. Correcting the bodily structure allows the body to produce its own remedies.
While manipulation remains the most common osteopathic method, osteopaths also recognize the significance of medicines, surgery and nutrition in the treatment of disease.
Osteopathic manipulation of the musculature and skeleton is now commonly used in association with chiropractic, physiotherapy, naturopathy and herbal treatments. Because manipulation is potentially dangerous, it is advisable to consult a practitioner who is a member of an association like the Australian Society of Osteopaths or the United Osteopathic Physicians Guild.
