Neural stimulation 300x213 Neural stimulation against autoimmune diseasesA Bostonian company is developing a neural stimulator whose objective to stabilize the immune system out of control in this type of diseases.

The investigation, which began a decade ago, trying to decipher the connections between the brain and immune system control, especially in the process of inflammation.

Treatment – which not yet tested in humans – constitute a breakthrough applied to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and in rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune in nature all.

Brain and Immune Function

It is known that the brain has a direct connection with the spleen, the organ that contains several types of immune cells ready to launch in case of infection.

Brain and inflammation

It was shown the vagus nerve, the organ that controls in part the inflammatory process, sending signals to the brain and other organs.

Stimulation of this nerve can control or stop the fast contribution of immune cells to the site of infection course, with an effect similar to that of TNF drugs used to treat arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

Advantages of neural stimulation

  • Do not lose effectiveness over time, as with TNF treatments.
  • Lack serious side effects.
  • All indications are that the new treatment works better than current drugs, or simultaneously with them.
  • It can be controlled easily. If the patient suffers a crisis, the device could be switched off immediately, while drugs may take days to clear.

fried chicken 300x225 Fried foods may increase the risk of prostate cancerEating fried foods like French fries and fried chicken on a regular basis can be linked to increased risk of prostate cancer, according to a recent study.

Previous research has suggested that eating foods prepared with cooking methods of high temperature, like grilled meat, may increase the risk of prostate cancer. But this is the first study to examine how fried foods can affect the risk.

The researchers examined data from nearly 1,500 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 1,500 men without the disease. The men, aged 35 to 74 years, provided details about their eating habits. Men who reported eating fries, fried chicken, fried fish at least once a week had a 30% to 37% more likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ate these foods at least once a month. Men who consumed these foods at least once a week also had a slightly higher risk of more aggressive prostate cancer, according to the study, which found an association between fried foods and risk of prostate cancer, but could not prove a cause-effect relationship.

This increased risk of prostate cancer can be due to the fact when the oil is heated to high temperatures used for frying, can form potentially cancer-causing compounds in fried foods. And the more oil reused again and the longer the time of frying, the greater the amounts of these toxic compounds.

breast cancer screening 300x198 Link between Breast Cancer and DiabetesThe postmenopausal survivors of breast cancer have a higher risk of developing diabetes and should be examined more carefully in order to detect the disease, suggest a new study.

The researchers analyzed medical data from the years 1996-2008 in the province of Ontario, Canada, to determine the incidence of diabetes among the nearly 25,000 breast cancer survivors 55 years of age or older and nearly 125,000 women in the same average age without breast cancer.

During a median follow-up of more than five years, nearly 10 percent of all women in the study had developed diabetes. Compared with those who had not had breast cancer, diabetes risk among breast cancer survivors was 7 percent higher than two years after the diagnosis of cancer and a 21 percent higher 10 years after cancer diagnosis, the researchers found.

The risk of diabetes, however, decreased over time among breast cancer survivors who had undergone chemotherapy. Your risk compared to women without breast cancer was 24 percent higher in the first two years after diagnosis of cancer and 8 percent 10 years after diagnosis of cancer, according to the study.

May chemotherapy treatment may contribute to the early development of diabetes in susceptible women. An increase in the rate of weight gain can be observed after receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer, which may be a factor in increasing the diabetes risk in women receiving treatment.

alcohol drug addiction 300x265 Cancer Prevention: Diagnosis and self diagnosisMedical tests carried out regularly allow us to detect diseases promptly to intervene sooner in their treatment.

As for the detection of hypertension prior to symptomatology, life extension numbers in the millions.

With regard to cancer, there are a series of self-diagnostic tests that can be performed at home. Among these we highlight three, it is recommended to place at least once a month.

The early detection of breast cancer, skin, testes, multiplies your chances of healing.

Check the skin

Skin check is appropriate to exclude the risk of cancer in both men and women.

Signs to look out for are moles, new or old moles that change color, grow in size, produce itching, bleeding.

A wound that fails to heal, especially if you are in a part of the body exposed to the sun.

Check the breasts

To detect early breast cancer in women. Should do from twenty.

The test performed after each menstrual cycle and after the menopause, the same day each month.

Searching should be palpated to a change in the form or the detection of lumps.

Check the testes

In order to prevent testicular cancer, men should be examined from twenty.

Examine your testicles once a month after a bath or a hot shower.

We must find some kind of swelling or lump.

There are disorders that produce symptoms, but there are the other diseases that may not cause symptoms in a while, but are detectable in the beginning with full reviews.

To upgrade the overall health and to establish a physician – patient relationship should be a thorough physical examination at least once a year.

Obstructive sleep apnea linked to increased cancer risk

sleep apnea Obstructive sleep apnea linked to increased cancer riskA large-scale Spanish study suggests that there is an association between obstructive  sleep apnea and the development of cancer in men under 65. But researchers say the findings on age and sex should be interpreted with caution because the small number of individuals in each age and gender subgroup may have decreased the ability to correctly identify at-risk populations. However, they say, the associations found merit further study.

Intermittent hypoxia, one of the more specific features of obstructive sleep apnea, apparently plays an important role in the formation and progression of tumors, according to Dr. Francisco said Campos-Rodriguez, Unit Sleep-Disordered Breathing Valme Hospital, Seville, Spain. Yet despite sharing this pathophysiological pathway, a possible association between apnea and the risk of cancer had not been previously evaluated in human cohorts.

It was also noted that a recent study by the Sleep Spanish Network showed that when mice are subjected to a pattern of intermittent hypoxia mimicking sleep apnea, the rate of growth of melanoma tumors is twice that of the animal control are not subjected to hypoxia. Mice subjected to intermittent hypoxia more lung metastases also show that the control group .

These findings led the researchers to conduct a study on a cohort to investigate whether the apnea is associated with an increased incidence of cancer in humans. And, apparently, the longer a patient with apnea happens with low oxygen levels, the higher your risk of developing cancer.
