If you cut yourself with a sharp object, the wound heals itself in a few days. If the damage is not excessive, the repair job is so perfect, that in a few weeks you cannot even find the location of the cut.

All you need to do is not disturb the healing process -protect the wound from getting dirty and keep the separated parts together.

Now let us analyze in more detail, what exactly happens in such a healing process.

When you cut yourself it hurts. The pain informs you, which part of your body requires your attention. When you attend the wound promptly by cleaning it with clean water or your own saliva and covering it perhaps, the pain is greatly reduced. If you do not clean the wound, it would be automatically cleaned by the blood flowing from it, and then the blood flow would be stopped.

During the healing process, the pain is limited or eliminated, unless you try to use the damaged organ too soon -increasing pain informs you immediately that your organ is not yet ready.

The body performs a repair job on itself. All cells which were separated by a cut are growing to join together again. There are many different types of cells and tissues being reconstructed so they can join together again. Without any mistakes, all blood vessels, muscles, nerves etc. are reconstructed and then connected. Even if some of the tissue is missing, the body replaces it. Sometimes a temporary scar tissue is used, which is later replaced by the optimal tissue selected by the body.

Note, that all this microsurgery with perfectly adjusted anesthetic happens automatically within your body. No one has any right to take any credit for such healing. You did the healing for yourself, with the perfect result.

Depression in adolescents is a disorder that occurs due to persistent sadness, loss of interest, loss of self esteem and despair. Depression is usually a temporary reaction to stress. Depression is a normal part of the maturation process of adolescents. It is even induced due to the production of sex hormones. Adolescent females are depressed twice as often as teenage boys, according to a study.

The behavior of adolescents is usually marked with good and bad moods. The transition from a good mood to bad mood and vice versa, can take minutes, hours or even days. That is the real reason why depression is very difficult to find out. Depression in adolescents may be caused due to poor school performance, breaking with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and relationships with friends and family. These causes can lead to persistent depression. Other causes are severe chronic disease, obesity, child abuse, stressful lifestyle, poor social skills, giving attention unstable and depression in family history.

<script type="text/javascript"

Symptoms of depression in adolescents are eating disorders, weight change, irritable mood, excessive daytime sleepiness, excessive temper, criminal behavior, memory loss, fatigue, self-contained worry, sadness, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness, loss of interest, free from hatred, obsession with death and the thoughts and suicide attempts. When these symptoms have been observed for more than two weeks, it is important to get treatment for adolescents. Depression not only affects interpersonal relationships, but school performance as well. Depressed adolescents are more likely to have drug and alcohol as an attempt to overcome her depression. These problems require intensive treatment.

The doctor will take blood test and physical exam to determine the cause of depression. The adolescent may also be tested for substance abuse such as smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, smoking marijuana and other drug use. After physical examination, psychiatric evaluation is also to understand the cause of sadness, loss of interest and irritability. Depression can also lead to the development of other psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mania and anxiety. It is also important to determine if the adolescent presents a risk to himself and others. The family and school personnel can provide valuable information about adolescent suicide.

Treatment for depression in adolescents is similar to the treatment of depression in adults. Along with treatment, adolescents were given antidepressant medication and psychotherapy. Include tricyclic antidepressants, Prozac, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. Some medications increase the risk, so it’s a good idea for parents to discuss the possible risks with your doctor. Only some of antidepressant medications are for children and adolescents. Adolescents with major depression have to be hospitalized because they are more likely to kill themselves.

The family and school support is needed to address adolescent depression. Parents can get their children admitted to emotional growth schools, boot camps or wilderness programs, to address behavior problems. These programs consist of non-medical personnel and confrontational therapies. But be careful some of the programs in turn can affect children who are depressed and sensitive. The teenagers, who get caught because of crime, special care must be taken from their parents. It is better that children face the consequences and learn a lesson from it. Depressed teens respond well to treatment if they were treated in general and early. More than half of adults know that depression when they were in their teens.

Dimitri, a family physician affiliated with UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, who promotes open access, i.e. same-day scheduling of patient appointments. According to the article, this change has helped Dr. Dimitri address some of the problems associated with an over-burdened practice and has helped alleviate his patients’ experiences with delayed bookings and long wait-times.

The article further states, “Dimitri’s patients start calling in at 9 a.m. and are assigned 15-minute time slots on a first-call, first-serve basis. Those who want a traditional scheduled appointment can try for the two to three hours a day he reserves for advanced bookings … A few extra slots are left open for walk-ins and emergencies.” Importantly, the article goes on to mention that Dr. Dimitri’s office does not double-book and has very few no-show patients.

I share this article with you for two reasons. First, we should support physicians and providers in developing and adopting innovative and efficient approaches to delivering high quality, patient-centered care. Second, strategies like open-access scheduling are one of many opportunities that we will discuss Monday during the launch of the Health Care Finance and Policy (HCFP) Symposium, a new series of informational events aimed at better engaging consumers and policy makers on timely issues in health care, like integration and costs.

The kick-off event – Monday, July 19th from 10 a.m. to noon – will begin with a presentation of key findings from three new DHCFP reports (potentially preventable hospitalizations, preventable/avoidable emergency department use, and primary care in Massachusetts). Next, a panel will react to these findings, and discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving the delivery of health care services in Massachusetts. The panel will be moderated by my dear friend and colleague, John Auerbach, Commissioner of the Department of Public Health.

Panelists include:
•	Amy Whitcomb Slemmer, Executive Director, Health Care for All
•	Normand Deschene, CEO, Lowell General Hospital
•	Lori Berry, CEO, Lynn Community Health Center, Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers
•	Carla Bettano, Vice President of Business Development, Neighborhood Health Plan
•	Dr. Michael Wagner, Chief, Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care, Tufts Medical Center
•	Jon Hurst, President, Retailers Association of Massachusetts

Though registration for this event is full, I welcome you to attend a future HCFP Symposium. We look forward to addressing other important health care policy issues, such as transparency and wellness.

The state government announced last week that were awarded grants totaling $ 85,000 dollars to the cities of Boston and Brockton to continue their fight against obesity. In a previous message – when Massachusetts received more than half a million dollars for the same purpose – commented that he thought it ironic that more money was needed to get people to eat less. Let me talk about how these cities proposing to invest the funds.

Part of the problem of obesity has to do with cost and access to healthy foods. In less privileged areas of the city, which concentrates the largest population densities and greater poverty, convenience stores are more common than the supermarkets. You should ask yourself, why is this a problem? Because in a supermarket you will find a variety of fruits, vegetables, meats and a selection of natural ingredients. Convenience stores will find, as the name implies, convenience. As regards edible, which are located crisp, canned goods, frozen foods, etc.. To say, not particularly healthy food.

But we know that obesity has to do with things other than food. It has to do, for example, lack of physical activity. Say you’d like to ride a bike or walk after dinner, but lives in a dangerous area with little lighting and streets in bad conditions for walking. Imagine that you want to have your son play ball or play outside with friends, but in your area there is a safe park.

Boston and Brockton propose to deal with a range of topics ranging from the increased availability of healthy food and drink in public places, to provide support to local businesses to offer healthy food and drink in the areas of greatest need. We also propose to fix streets and parks to encourage people to walk, bike and exercise more. These are just some examples.

Yes it is true that the secret can be as simple as eating a little less. It is also true that $ 85,000 dollars may seem a little money to achieve such ambitious goals such as making changes in regulation or municipal convince supermarkets to settle in poorer areas, but these proposals are creative, promising and, above all, necessary. As a society, we can not afford to allow our children to contract chronic disease that are easily preventable, diseases not only cause pain and suffering to those who suffer them, but also their families. For many years, experts have been saying that they do not solve the obesity problem in this country for the first time in our history we have a generation with lower life expectancy than the previous one.

And you? What changes would it take to protect the health of your family, neighbors and community in general?

Perhaps you noticed that you have in the menu on the right is a new section, titled “Skeptics reports.” It is an idea that originated when I did low carb diet. I spent enough time searching studies “truth” I confirmed or denied that diets high in fat and protein were unhealthy.

The truth is that most of the available information confirms this idea. However, I decided to push it a little more and turn to the sources, since that information was often vague and very general, obtained at low stem magazines, internet, etc. Furthermore, there was the odd dissenting voice (on the other hand common in any area that a deepening) of some standing and on the other hand, my curiosity needed more details to know the why and the how of all those claims.

What was my surprise to find that some of the most recent studies in prestigious medical journal in the world contradict many of the accepted paradigms in nutrition: In some cases, modifying the diet including fruits verdures and did not reduce cardiovascular risk. In others, higher cholesterol values entailed a longer life.

Well, I will share that information to anyone interested. Moreover, for the record I do not intend to stop anyone from listening to her doctor, I just want to promote critical and skeptical spirit and enhance that professional journalists and communicators “current it” a little more time to make claims of weight.

Completed section I will go slowly and try to include studies of other issues, if I find content of interest. Sadly and suddenly, all are in English, of course. For the “non-angloentendientes” lazy reading and academic and scientific (usually pretty boring, really), I include a brief summary-review of each.

One more thing to complete, I am not convinced much of Study skeptics. “Is any suggestions? I begin: “Reports breakers”, “Studies controversial” …?
